Volunteer Care Projects with Children Overseas in Argentina

Although Argentina has made a lot of progress since the economic crisis in 2001-2002, it still faces considerable challenges as a result of income and regional poverty. Projects Abroad works with a number of disadvantaged communities in Argentina, which suffer from problems such as lack of education, marginalization, drug use, and general lack of support to children. As a Care volunteer, you will provide the individual support and attention that every child needs, but which the staff in the organizations we work with rarely get the chance to provide.

You will find there is a role for you whether you are volunteering during a gap year, summer vacation, career break, or if you are retired and want others to benefit from your experience. All we ask is that you have energy, enthusiasm, and a commitment to seeing the work through. Our local staff will provide support throughout your project.

If you would like to volunteer in Argentina with children, you will be working in one of many placements in Cordoba, Argentina’s second largest city, and the surrounding area. If you have a love of horses, then you could even contribute on our Equine Therapy project. When you apply, please let us know where you feel you would best be able to help and our staff will work with you to match you to a suitable placement.

Volunteering on a Care Project in a Children's Home in Argentina

Projects Abroad works mainly with children’s' homes in Argentina. Most of the homes are relatively small and here your role will be very hands-on, helping with the everyday care for up to about 20 children. At these homes, you are given freedom to develop your own activities to entertain the children. Volunteers here will find that the days pass quickly, although you can expect to feel tired out at the end of it!

Whatever skills and talents you have, volunteer work with children in Argentina will give you the opportunity to put them to good use. Teach the children to dance, draw, or play soccer; you could even arrange to take the children on a day trip. The more time and effort you put in, the more rewarding your placement will be both for the children you are working with and for you yourself.

Volunteer ProfileMelissa JarrellMelissa Jarrell
I learned quickly what "making a difference" really is. I worked in Bethel’s Children home in Villa Allende, which is about a half-hour outside of Cordoba City. In Bethel Children's Home (or in any care placement), that is seeing love sliding off of you and onto the children, pouring onto them what they need most and lack if volunteers from Argentina and international alike do not offer that to them. The kids' vibrancy of love back onto you reflects that love, and that is how you can tell how much you are giving them. Read more...

Volunteering on a Special Needs Care Placement in Argentina

Volunteer with special needs children in Argentina There are also opportunities to work in a number of centres for disabled people and others with special-needs. The ages of those you will be working with in these placements can be very varied, and you may find yourself working with young children, teens, and adults. If you have any experience working in special education your skills will be highly valued, though there is no experience necessary to participate in this program.

When helping out at centres for those with mental and physical disabilities, you are likely to be asked to help with a wide range of activities. The staff will need help with basic daily activities including meal times. You will also have some time to spend one on one with individuals at your placement, helping them with basic education or activities of your choice. There are some opportunities to get involved in physical therapy sessions and help with necessary daily exercises. It can make a huge difference for these individuals to have your attention, support, and friendship, and you will quickly find that you are an integral part of the staff team.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Argentina Care Management Plan.

This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
