Volunteer in Vietnam Teaching PE and Coaching Sports in Schools

You can volunteer on a Sports project in Vietnam without any previous coaching experience. Experienced volunteers are of course welcome too. Whether taking a gap from education, a career break, or even a volunteer vacation, all we ask is that you have a passion for fitness and a desire to help others develop their own physical ability.

Volunteers work in either a primary or secondary school in Hanoi, coaching PE classes to students aged from 6 to 15 years old. The number of students in each class varies from about 30 to 55 students. The lessons usually last 40 minutes and take place in the school's yard. Each class meets twice a week.

Soccer and basketball are the most popular sports, though teaching new sports would also be welcome. Let us know which sports you are most interested in when you apply and we will match you to a suitable school.

Volunteering Abroad on a Sports Project in Vietnam

The main emphasis of the School Sports project is to get as many children involved as possible. Offering sporting activities in this way helps children become fitter and healthier as well as gain a sense of belonging to a team with a common goal. This in turn has positive benefits for the wider society because the youth in the local community are engaged in wholesome activities, which give them structure and purpose.

Volunteers work alongside local teachers who will be introduced to them during their placement induction. The presence of a volunteer in the schools also gives students the valuable opportunity to practice their English. Volunteers usually start off as the PE teacher's assistant and in some instances may lead the class in an activity. With time, depending on your ability and enthusiasm, you may be given a more prominent role within the class.

This project offers you a real chance to use your athletic skills while interacting with Vietnamese teachers and students and playing a role in the local community. Your efforts are sure to be greatly appreciated. You will find the development you see in your students to be incredibly rewarding, while at the same time knowing that you are a part of a bigger network of volunteers and teachers who are positively impacting Vietnam's youth.

This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
