Volunteers Step Up to Support January Tanzania Maasai Water & Sanitation Project

Projects Abroad is excited to begin work on a special Water & Sanitation project in Tanzania and has found the volunteers to do the work. Following the success of several Water & Sanitation Projects worldwide, Projects Abroad and partner BridgIT Water are returning to Tanzania in January 2013 to continue with their life changing work. The six volunteers needed to make the project a reality quickly came forward after the project was announced this fall.

Baby Tapir Born at Peru Conservation Project

Last month our Conservation Project in Peru was blessed with the birth of little Theo, a baby tapir! Theo is the first tapir to be born at Taricaya Animal Rescue Centre as part of our captive breeding program. He is doing very well and his mother, Isabella, is taking good care of him.

Inca Project Makes National Press with Rock Art Discovery

Projects Abroad volunteers have been working alongside archaeologist Zenobio Valencia on the Inca Project in Peru. Recently, they have uncovered a number of indentations which they believe to be a form of Incan rock art-work.

10 décembre : Journée mondiale des droits de l’Homme

Le 10 décembre, c’est la journée mondiale des droits de l’Homme. L’occasion de faire un zoom sur quelques actions de nos volontaires en droits de l’Homme sur le terrain en Afrique,  au Ghana, au Sénégal, en Afrique du Sud et en Tanzanie. Quelques actions, parmi beaucoup d’autres, autant de petites gouttes qui permettent de former un océan. Car les droits de l’Homme avancent dans le monde avec l’aide de tous !

Drama Mini Project in Romania Brings Volunteers Together

At the end of November all Projects Abroad volunteers in Romania were involved in the Drama Mini Project in Brasov. The project was directed by American volunteer Victoria Waldthausen, who adapted the classic story of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ for everyone to perform.

3 étudiantes d’école de commerce au Costa Rica

De retour d’une mission écovolontariat de deux mois au Costa Rica, 3 étudiantes de l’Ecole de Gestion et de Commerce (EGC) de Chambéry, décident de partager leur expérience avec leurs camarades à travers des photos, une projection vidéo et en nous expliquant de A à Z comment elles ont pu mener à bien leur projet.

Volunteers Work with the Street Children of Senegal

Over the past month Projects Abroad volunteers have been very busy helping improve the quality of life of the Talibés in Senegal. Projects Abroad volunteers work with several Talibé centres throughout the year and we fund a variety of programmes, from free breakfast schemes to Micro-finance loan projects for older Talibé students.

Laura, volontaire en Afrique du Sud

Laura Braut, 23 ans, a participé à notre projet sport au Cap en Afrique du Sud. Durant ces 3 mois de mission, Laura a mis en place des cours d’éducation physique et a aidé les enfants à créer un journal pour l’école. Passionnée par son projet, et grâce à son esprit d’initiative et son énergie, elle a vraiment pu faire la différence dans son école.

Dons de kits scolaires aux orphelins du Togo

Afin de faciliter la rentrée scolaire aux orphelins de Kpomé au Togo, Projects Abroad et ses volontaires ont fait un don de 120 kits scolaires aux enfants de six structures partenaires, le Jeudi 11 Octobre dernier.

Volunteers Urgently Needed for Tanzania Maasai Water Project

Projects Abroad has teamed up again with the BridgIT Water Foundation to investigate water issues in the Endulen Maasai community in Ngorongoro Conservation Park. Endulen School is located within this community and has around 800 students. Currently there is no water at the school, not even a working water tank. We are looking for volunteers to help solve this problem.

Volunteers in Argentina have been coming up with some ingenious ways of fundraising to support one of our Care projects recently. One Saturday in October three teams of volunteers set out to the green parks of Cordoba to sell homemade cakes to the locals.

Enseignement de l’anglais au Kenya : besoin de volontaires

L’école gratuite étant obligatoire au Kenya depuis 2003, un grand afflux d’élèves a dû faire face alors à un manque de professeurs formés. Encore aujourd’hui, le nombre d’enseignants au Kenya est insuffisant par rapport au nombre d’enfants scolarisés. Les effectifs atteignent en moyenne 50 élèves par classe.

Campaign Against Child Trafficking Gains Momentum

The Campaign Against Child Trafficking organized by Projects Abroad Human Rights volunteers in Ghana has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. Two Projects Abroad PRO social workers have been working in Kete Krachi with the children of a rescue shelter called ‘Village for Life.’

Seahorse Experts Visit Cambodia Conservation Project

This month Projects Abroad funded a visit to the Cambodia Conservation Project for two of the UKs leading seahorse experts, Neil Garrick-Maidment from the Seahorse Trust and Kealan Doyle from Save Our Seahorses. The pair spent a week out in Cambodia.

Stages Droits de la personne : lutte contre le trafic d’enfants

Le 12 juin est la journée mondiale contre le travail des enfants. Une cause pour laquelle Projects Abroad s’engage. Au Ghana, le PAHO, Projects Abroad Human Rights Office, lance une campagne contre le trafic d’enfants et pour la défense des droits de l’enfant. Plusieurs actions de terrain sont menées par les volontaires du projet droits de la personne et les membres permanents du bureau.

Protect the Endangered Rothschild Giraffe in Kenya

With the launch of our Conservation Project in Kenya comes the unique chance to work with one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies in the world. There are sadly only around 450 Rothschild giraffes in the wild. Our Conservation volunteers in Kenya are able to contribute to a project which aims to protect this species in order to see that number increase.

Une mission PRO en médecine dentaire en Chine

Une volontaire PRO de Projects Abroad, Jennifer Caplin, participe à une mission médecine de 8 mois à Shanghai depuis le mois de novembre. Après avoir étudié 4 ans à l’université puis 4 ans dans une école dentaire, le docteur Caplin a choisi de s’engager comme volontaire car elle ressentait le besoin d’un changement avant de rejoindre le monde du travail.

Projects Abroad Care volunteers in Senegal have been doing a great job in one of the local Talibé Centers. Noticing that the children’s feet were bare and injured Naomi from the US, Christina from Norway and Coby from Germany resolved to club together and buy some shoes.

Sri Lanka - Séminaire médical pour les volontaires en médecine

Un séminaire médical a eu lieu en mars dernier au Sri Lanka  pour l’ensemble de nos volontaires en médecine. L’évènement, organisé par Projects Abroad et le Lions’ Club, a reçu le précieux soutien de plusieurs volontaires de Projects Abroad en mission médecine. Il y avait également trois médecins des hôpitaux gouvernementaux de la région venus prêter main forte à l’occasion de cet évènement. Cela a permis d’enseigner aux volontaires de Projects Abroad comment réaliser des bilans de santé élémentaires.

Lutte contre le VIH en Jamaïque

Entre 2007 et 2012, la Jamaïque a adopté un plan de lutte contre le SIDA qui a pour but de privilégier la prévention, en insistant sur l’importance au préalable, de la réduction des risques de transmission du virus. Notre bureau en Jamaïque met en place actuellement une campagne de sensibilisation afin de développer des actions spécifiques. Les volontaires de Projects Abroad pourront bientôt y participer.

Projects Abroad Dentistry PRO Success in China

Projects Abroad PRO volunteer, Dr Jennifer Caplin, has been working with us since November on an intensive eight month dentistry project in Shanghai. Having completed four years of university and a further four years of dental school, Dr Caplin told us of her need for a change before entering the workforce!

Fiji Flooding - Outstanding Contribution from Volunteers

Projects Abroad’s volunteers in Fiji have made an exceptional effort with their Flood Relief Donation Campaign in aiding local Fijians who have been affected by the recent flooding. Volunteers had a brilliant idea of setting up a camp at Nadi International Airport where they had a very successful day collecting donations.

Ghana Medicine Volunteer Becomes Doctor

Lizzie Bendle volunteered on a Medicine project with Projects Abroad as a pre-university student in Togo and Ghana in 2001. After deferring her university entry for a year Lizzie decided to use her gap year to gain some worthwhile experience in her chosen field of study - medicine.

Ensemble pour un monde meilleur

L’équipe de Projects Abroad Roumanie a mis en place la 3ème édition de l’événement caritatif « Aimer c’est donner et donner c’est recevoir » aux côtés de la Fondation Rafael (qui travaille avec les personnes handicapées) et en collaboration avec les étudiants du Centre culturel de Brasov. L’objectif est de pouvoir récolter un maximum de fonds au profit de la Fondation Rafael de Codlea.

Volunteers Needed for Building Project in Tanzania!

Projects Abroad volunteers in Tanzania have had a busy year! They are coming to the end of a building project in a school in Engikarat, near Kilimanjaro, and in the next month we hope to see its grand opening… Following on from this success we now have even more ambitious plans to build a primary school in the Maasai village of Meserani, south of Arusha.

Ghana Volunteer Takes on Round the World Yacht Race

Following on from a 3 month placement in Ghana, Harriet Walker has been inspired to take on a new challenge, a round the world yacht race! Here she tells us more: ‘This time last year I had just arrived in Cape Coast, Ghana and given half the chance I would get on a flight back over there tomorrow! It was my three month trip of a lifetime that inspired me to take on my next big adventure – The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Senegal Care Volunteer Donates Bookshelves

Projects Abroad volunteer, Virginie Thouvenin, from France, has made an unusual and inventive donation to her care placement in Senegal. Noticing the need for a more organized way of storing the children’s books, she sought out a carpenter in order to install four bookshelves.

Conservation Manager, Richard Munday updates us on the exciting Scarlet Macaw project, which forms part of our Conservation Project in Costa Rica: 'As each month passes we are gradually increasing the rhythm of the Macaw project so that eventually, when we reach April/May we are there 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Journée Internationale de la femme : témoignage de terrain de Myriam sur une mission en Droit de la personne auprès des femmes du Maroc

L'aventure d'une jeune femme au Maroc ne peut être que fascinante alors que l'ensemble de la région du Moyen-Orient et de l'Afrique du Nord est secouée d'une révolution soutenue principalement par des jeunes et…par des femmes ! Certains diront que le Maroc ne fût touché que de façon minime par les révoltes du Printemps Arabe. Toutefois, ceux-ci réaliseraient leur tort s'ils constataient les réformes entreprises par le Maroc suite aux pressions du peuple. Parmi celles-ci, l'adoption d'une Nouvelle Constitution.

Projects Abroad's Grass-Roots Journalism Project, Voices of the World is Growing

Our international, community-focused journalism project, Voices of the World is gaining momentum. We have now established Voices of the World clubs in India, Romania, South Africa and Senegal, thus giving the chance to local young people to attend free workshops on journalism and publish their articles in our online publication – www.voices-of-the-world.org.

Volunteers Asked to Bring-A-Book to Ghana!

Our first donations from the Bring-A-Book programme were presented to Apostolic Preparatory School in Ghana last month by volunteers, Hannah Pascoe-Smith, Harrison Swaine and Thomas Haynes. Bring-A-Book is a programme in which volunteers are asked to bring English children's books with them when they arrive in their destination countries.

New Care and Teaching Projects in Siem Reap, Cambodia

Due to the success of our placements in Phnom Penh we have now expanded to Siem Reap. Siem Reap is a large town about 5 hours’ drive from Phnom Penh and is famous for being the closest town to the incredible temple complexes of Angkor Wat.

Bolivia Music Volunteer Appears on National TV!

Projects Abroad volunteer, Lauren Brant, had a unique opportunity during her Music Project to make an appearance on one of Bolivia’s biggest television channels. Lauren volunteered with us last year and after 3 months of teaching music to blind children, both hers and the student’s hard work was recognised.
