Projects Abroad's Soccer Academy Receives Support from Arsenal Star
Emmanuel Eboué of English Premiership team, Arsenal has recently thrown his support behind the latest Projects Abroad sport project. Projects Abroad have set up a soccer academy to help develop the talents of a local community team based in Ghana. The academy, which has 3 youth teams and 1 senior team, provides top quality coaching for over 80 players in the Cantonments area of Accra, the capital of Ghana.
Eboué, a graduate of the Jean-Marc Guillou's soccer academy in Abidjan, knows the importance of soccer academies for a player's development, "At the academy we were taught to keep possession and control the ball," he says. "The focus was more on the technical and tactical side of the game. There is less emphasis on physical conditioning because that probably tends to come more naturally. "After years at the Jean-Marc Guillou academy he moved with a few graduates to K.S.K. Beveren in Belgium in September 2002. But he has never forgotten his roots in Africa and is committed to helping with soccer development.
The Cantonments Soccer Academy caters for local boys aged six to seventeen, providing age-specific coaching and competitive league matches throughout. Having developed over a number of years in the local Cantonments community, this club truly offers a unique playing experience, including professional European coaching methods combined with a lively and caring Ghanaian family atmosphere.
Projects Abroad's sport co-ordinator, Scott McQuarrie, says "The support Emmanuel is giving our soccer academy is great. His interest in the academy highlights to our players that even if you have a humble beginning in the game, you can, with hard work, achieve your goal. Like many of our players, Emmanuel knows exactly what it is like to grow up in a disadvantaged neighborhood with limited facilities, equipment and coaching. He is proving a real inspiration for our players and many like them in West Africa."
The support from Eboué comes at an opportune time for the Cantonments Soccer Academy - two of their players have just been selected for trials with a team in Cyprus. For further information on Cantonments Soccer Academy please visit www.ghana-football-academy.org.
