Results of School Drawing Competition in Peru

Peru Country Director, Tim DeWinter tells us about a recent drawing competition organized by Projects Abroad:

Winning entry by Julio Caceres

‘We often try to provide opportunities to other institutions throughout the Sacred Valley that we do not often work with. One example of this is the Bellas Artes art institute which is based in Calca. At the end of last year we gave the students of this institute the task of creating posters of the daily life of the Peruvian family. These posters will be used by the teachers in our partner kindergartens.

During a workshop at the institute around thirty students arrived to take part in the competition, creating as many entries as they wished during the set three hours. An amazing 104 entries were received by the end of the afternoon. We then selected seven winners who attended a second workshop in the Projects Abroad office in order to improve their work for the purpose of using the posters as classroom material.

Winning entry by Edwin Ccahua

One of the ideas behind these new posters is to encourage our partner kindergarten teachers to use more open questions within their classrooms, encouraging the children to use their imaginations a lot more.

Scenes of the market, school children working in the countryside, household scenes and other daily scenes that are found in Peru were created in order for the children in the kindergartens to be able to relate to these scenes. Our Bellas Artes winners received their prizes, two of which received a prize for two pieces of work. We look forward to the possibility of working with these talented students again in the future.’
