Volunteer Abroad Programs for High School Students

A young care and community volunteer is captured reading to the children in Cambodia

Every year, we see increasing numbers of Canadian high school students choosing to volunteer abroad on our programs, especially during the months of July and August. Students eager to make the most of their summer vacations can particpate in one of our international volunteer projects from two weeks to a month (or even longer if their schedule permits).

If you have just finished high school and are not planning to take a gap year before attending university, you may still be able to fit in as many as 12 weeks of volunteering over the summer.

It is wonderful to see people volunteering and making a difference at such a young age and it seems to foster a great sense of responsibility and maturity. In addition, the experience of volunteering abroad is seen by both universities and employers as a positive use of time. You will find that the time you spent abroad is something that will set you apart from others when applying for universities and jobs and give you some great points to talk about in interviews.

If you can’t decide which volunteer project is best for you, then you can always call one of our Program Advisors who will talk through your options. You can also read stories from volunteers and we can even put you in touch with one of our former volunteers.

High School Volunteer Abroad Programs over the Summer

If you want to spend some time doing international volunteer work but cannot find time to go for your whole summer, you may be interested in our High School Specials. These projects are group trips designed specifically for high school students ages 16-19 and take place over two weeks or four weeks. Each project runs on specific dates to guarantee that there will be other people of the same age volunteering with you. Local Projects Abroad staff provide additional supervision and activities - evening meals, shows, and weekend trips - for the duration of the project, as well as all the normal services.

Joining a High School Special is a fantastic way to gain international work experience and enhance your resume or university application. If you want to know more please follow this link to our High School Special group trips.
