Hosts Ghana get off to a Flying Start in the African Nations

Local support

The African Cup of Nations began this month, with 16 teams battling it out in a 3 week soccer extravaganza. The eyes of the continent turned to Ghana - the host nation, and they did not disappoint with a 2-1 opening match victory over Guinea last Sunday.

Volunteers and staff made their way to the opening ceremony in Accra and in true Ghanaian style it was a colorful affair with dancing, singing and plenty of face paint.

Alongside Ghana three other Projects Abroad destinations, Senegal, Morocco, and South Africa all qualified for the competition, we hope they all do well.

This is a particularly exciting time for our soccer volunteers in Ghana. The presence of the tournament gives young keen Ghanaian’s an insight into the professional game, as well as giving them an incentive to succeed in the game they love.

To make the most of the passion for soccer this tournament looks set to engender among the Ghanaian people, Projects Abroad have decided to throw their own mini-tournament after the competition's climax. It will be run for junior teams between the ages of 11 and 14, and selected players will get a chance to join the soccer exchange program we run with our Moldovan club side Volunteers with Ghanaian flag Eikomena, who feature as "Team of the Month" in January's edition of the British soccer magazine "4-4-2"!
