Dentistry volunteer observes a local dentist working with a child in Bolivia

Projects Abroad Dentistry interns in Bolivia work at Centros de Salud, small health clinics that offer medical and dental care to the public. The Centros de Salud are open to anyone in Cochabamba, regardless of their ability to pay. The clinics have basic facilities and often a lack of funding for sufficient staff and medical resources.

Interns are assigned to a specific Centro de Salud and work as a dental assistant alongside the qualified local dentists. You will have the opportunity to observe and assist with a wide variety of dental procedures - from fillings to root canals and tooth extractions - and may even have the opportunity to observe complex orthodontic surgeries. The public health system in Bolivia offers dental care and education to children and adults of all ages.

Dentistry internships in Bolivia are suitable for all skill levels. Whether you are planning to study dentistry, a trained professional looking to gain some international experience, or somewhere in-between, Projects Abroad Dentistry placements in Bolivia offer a great opportunity to both help and learn.

Interning Abroad for Dentistry in Bolivia with Projects Abroad

The Centros de Salud are open from 8am - 12pm and 2pm - 6pm. Interns usually work either the morning or afternoon shift, but depending on your energy, you could also choose to work a full day.

In addition to the time at the clinic, Dentistry interns sometime take part in fluoride campaigns as part of community outreach projects. This is carried out alongside Projects Abroad Care volunteers at schools and orphanages.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Bolivia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

For the duration of your stay you will live with a host family, experiencing day-to-day Bolivian life. You will also have the opportunity to soak up the vibrancy of the city of Cochabamba with the Projects Abroad volunteer community.

Interns on all Medicine & Healthcare internships in Bolivia should be at least 18 years old and will need intermediate Spanish in order to communicate directly with the majority of medical staff and patients. Many interns who lack confidence in their Spanish normally take a Language course or join a Teaching or Care project before beginning their Medicine & Healthcare internship. This gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills before starting the medical part of your project.
