On the Public Health in Ghana Alternative Spring Break Trip you will volunteer to help with community-based medical outreach work and public health campaigns. Ghana is a rapidly developing African country, but where many people, especially children, do not receive regular medical care and there is need for more education about public health concerns.
This project focuses on two areas. The first is providing care to communities that otherwise do not have regular access to medical services. The second is prevention of disease through education. Under the guidance of our professional medical coordinator, the group will get involved with activities such as medical check-ups for children at orphanages, performing checks of vitals on babies, immunization drives, and discussions on health and hygiene with local schools and community groups.
While you do not have to have previous medical experience to contribute, this project is best for pre-med students building a resume for medical school and those studying healthcare fields such as nursing and community health who want to volunteer in Africa.
The project is based on the outskirts of Accra, Ghana’s capital city, in a town called Dodowa. During your time in Ghana, you will live with a local host family, who will welcome you into their home and introduce you to Ghanaian culture.
