Our Care placements are based in the town of Andasibe, a small town with a population of 12,000 people.

Volunteering on a Care Project in Madagascar with Projects Abroad

Projects Abroad Care volunteers plays an outdoor game with children at a school in Madagascar.

Projects Abroad works with a local primary school in Andasibe (primary schools are attended by children ages 7 to 13). In the mornings, you will help out local teachers by providing support during class. You can work one-on-one with individual students or with small groups.

In the afternoons, you will work at an after school program that provides extra care and education for children attending the school. These sessions, organized by the school principal, help keep the children busy in the afternoons and give them a safe space to learn and have fun.

Most of the children in the after school program are between the ages of 3 and 8 years old, although there are students up to the age of 15 who may join the afternoon activities as well. The school has limited resources, which means that you have an important role to play in giving the children the best care and support possible. You will also be a welcome pair of helping hands for the local staff and teachers.

At your placement, you will help with organizing creative and physical activities such as arts & crafts, games, basic literacy and numeracy lessons, and songs. Early Childhood Development will be your main focus. The after school program is flexible and can be tailored to your interests and skills. You could play sports like basketball, soccer, and Frisbee and help kids develop their team skills, or start an English conversation club – the options are endless!

Whether you are helping children learn to read, playing sports with them, or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give them will be hugely beneficial.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Madagascar Care Management Plan.

Your Role as a Care Volunteer in Madagascar

Social development, friendship, and emotional support are the key things you can offer as a volunteer. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel and explore.

Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help to volunteers working on Care Projects. This may include buying some paints or art materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers in Madagascar help to renovate a play area at a school. Suggestions from volunteers are welcomed and we are open to any ideas you may have to help improve the lives of the children with whom you are working.

You can join a Care Project in Madagascar for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

All volunteers participating on standard projects in Madagascar have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Rainforest Conservation Project in Madagascar page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
