In Madagascar, the ability to speak English and French opens the door for better employment opportunities, especially in the travel and hotel industries. Volunteering as a teacher in Madagascar with Projects Abroad is a great way to improve literacy levels in the community and give students the skills they need to improve their lives.
You do not need to have any formal teaching qualifications, TEFL training, or previous teaching experience to participate in this project. Whether you are on a gap year, career break, or looking for a meaningful way to contribute during a vacation period, you will have a positive impact on the lives of the children and teenagers you teach. Teaching abroad is also useful for students pursuing a career in education who are looking to improve their skills and learn new teaching methods.
The official languages in Madagascar are French and Malagasy, and English is an increasingly desirable language to learn. However, the levels of French and English at schools in Andasibe are low on the part of students and teachers and there is a lot of room for improvement. In your main role as an English teacher, you will help students build on their reading, writing, and comprehension abilities and assist local teachers with advancing their own language skills. You could also teach French if you are fluent in the language.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Madagascar Teaching Management Plan.
Volunteering as a Teacher in Madagascar with Projects Abroad
Projects Abroad volunteers work in elementary, junior, and high schools in Andasibe. Your exact role in the classroom will depend on your level of experience and confidence. You may be assisting the local teacher, working with small groups to practice conversational English, or you could be asked to lead the whole lesson.
Local staff are eager for you to get involved in teaching other subjects and organizing extra-curricular activities. Depending on your skills and interests, you could teach subjects such as math, drama, music, physical education, and more. In the afternoons, the school organizes afterschool activities to help keep the students occupied and give them extra support. These sessions can be tailored to your skills and interests, and you could teach a new sport or start an English conversation club.
Your role at the school will go beyond simply teaching in a classroom. You will help improve the students’ learning environment by teaching the importance of good hygiene practices. Whatever talents or skills you have, teaching in Madagascar will give you the opportunity to put them to good use. You can be creative with your teaching to make learning fun and you will discover that engaging the children through the use of games and songs will help to make them excited to learn.
You can join the Teaching Project in Madagascar for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in Madagascar have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Rainforest Conservation Project in Madagascar page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
