Medicine internships in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, where you will be working in a busy central hospital. You will find medicine and healthcare is practiced in Mongolia similar to North America. The doctors will help you achieve as much as possible during your internship by welcoming you in a variety of different departments. There are also a number of private complementary medical clinics where you can spend some time as well. This will provide a broad experience.

Medical interns in Mongolia must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Interning Abroad for Medicine in Mongolia with Projects Abroad

The supervisors on our Medicine placements in Mongolia have a lot of time for enthusiastic interns. While Mongolian law prohibits interns from treating patients directly, you can help provide basic observations. Other tasks might include helping to prepare equipment for surgery, transferring patients to surgery, observing surgery, and checking on patients post-surgery. By showing enthusiasm and gaining the confidence of the doctors and nurses by proving your ability, you may earn yourself a more hands-on role.

Volunteer Profile Volunteer Edward Chien shares his story from the Medicine project in Ghana
Edward Chien
“Going to Mongolia was the best educational experience that I could have asked for. I gained so much medical knowledge and hands-on experience within just five short weeks. Not only did I have a great time volunteering at the hospitals, I also had the exciting opportunity to travel to the countryside on the weekends, learn a lot about the culture, make a lot of new friends, and eat a lot of exotic and interesting things. I highly encourage anyone who is interested in traveling and volunteering in the medical field to consider Mongolia.” Read more...

Projects Abroad organizes regular medical outreaches for medical interns in order for you to gain a greater understanding of the Mongolian healthcare system. You may be involved in assisting with basic medical check-ups at a community center for homeless people, or assisting with a hand hygiene campaign at one of the local hospitals. We also offer monthly workshops providing interns with lessons about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system, and practical lessons on basic medical procedures, such as how to check blood pressure.

While you intern in Mongolia on our Medicine project, you will live with a welcoming Mongolian host family in Ulaanbaatar. There is much to see in the area and you can experience it with others as part of the Projects Abroad volunteer community.

Medicine internships in Mongolia are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
