A Sri Lankan woman gets a health check from a Projects Abroad volunteer.

Volunteering on the Medicine in Sri Lanka program with Projects Abroad is an opportunity for you to gain a unique insight into medical practices in the developing world over winter break. This is a structured project open to volunteers of all ages and skill levels, and you will work alongside other volunteers as part of a group.

In Sri Lanka, you will spend time in local medical institutions based in and around Colombo. The placement is ideal for those with a strong interest in the field and who are looking to enhance their medical knowledge.

During your time on the project, you and the other volunteers will be under the supervision of a Projects Abroad Coordinator. You will have the chance to spend time in the different departments of a general hospital, as well as visit a hospital specializing in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. You may also participate in worthwhile outreach activities where you will visit a local community.

When you arrive, you will be briefed on Sri Lanka's medical system and on Sri Lankan culture. Tips and advice will be given by your coordinators to make sure that you get the most out of the experience.

You will stay in a hostel or with a host family, depending on the number of volunteers joining this project. You will be able to spend Christmas and celebrate the New Year with other volunteers in Sri Lanka.

On the weekend and during your free time after work, you will get to see and experience more of what Sri Lanka has to offer. This includes a trip to a palm fringed beach, a visit to one of the spectacular ancient cities, leisure activities, and shopping.

Volunteer Profile Former volunteer Rebecca Kazen shares her story from working in Winter Break Medicine in Sri Lanka
Rebecca Kazen
My favorite placement was the labor and delivery room. I had never seen a birth before, and I was very nervous and excited for that placement. The doctor was very good at explaining what she was doing, and it was incredible to see someone help bring a life into the world. I will never forget witnessing the immediate bond between a mother and her child. Read more...
