A Projects Abroad Care project in Thailand is a great way for volunteers to help children in need and contribute toward important ongoing work in care centres and kindergartens. Whatever your age, abilities, or level of experience you are welcome to join a volunteer Care project in Thailand. You can join us if you are on a gap year (or even a gap month), on a career break, or even during your retirement.

Many volunteers find that a Care project abroad is one of the most rewarding types of voluntary work they can get involved in. For our volunteers, all we ask is that you have energy, enthusiasm, and a commitment to the children you work with. Our local staff will provide you with the very highest level of support throughout your time with us.

Care volunteers in Thailand are based either in Krabi or Ao Nang. Krabi is a one hour flight south of Bangkok and is located on the beautiful Andaman Sea coast of Thailand, which is a particularly popular destination for diving, rock-climbing, and those visiting the world famous Phi Phi Marine National Park.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Thailand Care Management Plan.

Volunteer in Care Centres in Thailand

A Thai child enjoys building blocks with a volunteer at a Care placement.

Although Thailand has many areas that are quite developed and it has schools that are world class, there is a growing gap in salaries and social class. With this social divide comes the fact that some children attend private care centres and some cannot afford to offer the same level of education to their children. Projects Abroad only work with day care centres that provide care and education to children for free and to those who do not have any other options. Volunteering on this project means you will help close the gap in child care and education.

Volunteer in Kindergartens in Thailand

Care volunteers help with all aspects of childcare including assisting children during lunch time

In both Krabi and Ao Nang the majority of care projects are in kindergartens with children aged from about 3 to 6 years old. This phase of a child's life and the support they receive at this time is incredibly important, and the positive influence a volunteer can have on a child in their pre-school years will hopefully last them for the rest of their lives.

The main way in which the volunteers can assist in Thai kindergartens is through providing creative and educational activities that will expose the children to and give them a familiarity with English. In a country that receives so much income from tourism and where knowledge of English can double your salary, surprisingly few people speak it. Your knowledge of English will be hugely beneficial for the children. Any activity that you do with the children, whether it is drawing, singing, puppet play, painting or coloring, will prepare the children better for today's widespread globalization.

Most Care volunteers will find themselves playing games and singing songs with the children, as well as talking to them naturally in English. While some children won't understand much of what's being said, they definitely pick up from their environment enough to know what you mean. In fact we notice a huge difference in the children's language ability between the kindergartens where we have had volunteers for a year or two, and those with whom we have just started working with more recently. Through having this daily interaction at an early age, you will be building strong foundations for a child's future relationships.

Grace Mitchell
My time in Thailand was AMAZING. The generosity and friendliness of the Thai people, the beauty of the surroundings, and the bonds I made with my host family, friends and the children made my experience the best I have ever had and utterly unforgettable. I would recommend Thailand to anyone and will definitely be returning! Read more...

Volunteer on a Care Project in Thailand with Projects Abroad

Thai children playing at Care project in Asia.

Volunteers take part in a wide variety of activities within the placements to work towards the goals identified in the Care Management Plan. Each activity is carefully designed to be able to contribute towards our goals of improving English, promoting early childhood development, improving hygiene levels, increasing emotional support, improving the level of stimulation of each child under our care, and improving the quality of life of those living with disabilities. There is also the opportunity to participate in one of four mini-campaigns that we run through the year, which focus on education and literacy, sports and the outdoors, the environment, and health and hygiene.

All of the volunteer Care projects in Thailand are eager to have volunteers with fresh ideas and energy to help the permanent staff. We try to take advantage of any particular skills or talents our volunteers have and match them to the placement where they can have the greatest impact. However, it is important to let the local staff know about your ideas and any extra activities you would like to try out. Thai staff can sometimes be reluctant to ask you to do too much work, so please show them your enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. Finally, set yourself achievable goals for your time in Thailand and remember that you are contributing to an ongoing process.

The kindergartens in Thailand have their main vacation from mid-March to mid-May, as well as a break from the start of September to the start of November. During these times we have special vacation programs to ensure we offer year round support.

The General Care Project in Thailand is available for less than a month if you do not have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.

All volunteers participating on standard projects in Thailand have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Diving & Marine Conservation & Environment Project in Thailand page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
