Participating on the Projects Abroad Conservation & Community program in Thailand is a great way for you to spend your break making a difference and learning more about marine life and conservation. It is also an opportunity for you to make a positive impact on a disadvantaged community.
During your two-week stay, you will complete an internationally recognized PADI Open Water course where you will learn everything you need to know to dive. In the initial stages of the course, you will be in shallow water, learning to how to breathe, clear your mask, and equalize pressure. You will also become familiar with the buddy system and underwater sign language.
Once you have qualified, you will be ready to descend into a stunningly clear underwater world of tropical fish, turtles, sea urchins, and corals. You will get involved with a variety of underwater conservation activities, such as reef checks, fish surveys, and other forms of data collection. All of these activities are supervised by our expert local staff.
Your land-based community work will be based at a site that our local staff have designated for improvements: previous groups have built a playground at a kindergarten and created an aquaculture pond in a local park. Depending on the weather, you might also give involved with beach clean-ups and mangrove reforestation initiatives in the area.
In Thailand, you and the other volunteers in your group will all stay in a comfortable guesthouse near the beach. There will also be time for fun, culture, and tourism, and your itinerary will include a kayak trip, a visit to a local market, plenty of delicious Thai cuisine, and a Thai massage.
