As a Projects Abroad Sports volunteer you can coach basketball abroad in Togo. Sports are extremely popular in Togo. While soccer is the most widely-played sport in the country, basketball is rapidly gaining popularity.
Our basketball coaching program is based in Lomé. The project allows volunteers to coach basketball to children and adults with a range of skills to help promote teamwork and encourage physical fitness.
Teach Basketball to Children with Projects Abroad
Volunteers work at Club Etoile Filante, which has a team that plays in the local first division. The team incorporates a mixture of coaching methods, including focusing on skills, theory, tactics, and general technique.
Volunteers coaching basketball work with children and adults aged from about 4 to 35 years old. Training takes place every day from 3–6pm, as there is no electricity on the basketball court for later evening practices once it is dark.
Volunteering Abroad on a Basketball Project in Togo
Your exact role as a volunteer coach will depend on your experience. If you are able to coach groups alone then your help will be greatly appreciated, but even by supporting the professional coach you will be a great help.
The basketball court is near a big market in town and volunteers usually live about a 15 minutes’ ride away.
Since most training sessions take place in the afternoons, in order to work more hours the Basketball Sports project should be combined with a Teaching or Care project in the mornings. Please let us know which combination of projects you prefer when you apply.
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
