The Public Health Project in Belize is a great way to do something different, gain practical experience, and contribute to a worthwhile program over your reading week or spring break. The project is based in San Pedro and is suitable for any university student interested in volunteering abroad. It is especially useful for students studying health care and pre-med students building resumes for medical school.
Belize has major development challenges and there is a general lack of education about medical conditions that affect lifestyle. Our volunteers discuss hypertension, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol and drug abuse, and the positive influence of good hygiene. This knowledge is a powerful tool for communities. By getting involved in outreach work, you will have a significant and long-term impact on lives.
The outreach work you do is centred on a preventative approach. You will help run campaigns about preventing diseases and the importance of healthy living, participate in outreaches providing basic medical check-ups, and conduct surveys at schools and in the community.
Throughout your time in Belize, you will live with a local host family. This is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and learn about daily life in Belize. When you are not volunteering, you can socialize with the other volunteers over a delicious local meal or relax on one of Belize’s beautiful beaches.
