Care & Conservation in the Galapagos Islands with Projects Abroad is a great way to travel with purpose and contribute to the support of disadvantaged children and conservation efforts. You will be based on the island of San Cristobal, where your time will be split between doing care work in the community and volunteering to protect endangered wildlife.
Our Galapagos Island Conservation project is located at the Galapagos National Park. Here, you will get involved with a wide range of ongoing projects which may include habitat restoration work, monitoring sea lions, marine iguana and sea bird population surveys, beach clean-ups, and environmental awareness workshops in the local community.
You will spend your other week working at a summer camp for disadvantaged children at a care centre in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Learning English and participating in other educational activities is important for the children and your support is vital. At the summer camp, you and the other volunteers will help run educational and creative activities at the care centres.
Living on the Galapagos Islands also gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a Spanish-speaking environment. If you are interested in improving your Spanish or learning the basics, you will be able to practice with locals.
When you arrive in Ecuador, all of the volunteers will be split into groups and therefore the order of your volunteer program is subject to change.
On the weekend, all of the High School Special volunteers will go on a trip to one or two of the neighbouring islands, where you can experience all the natural beauty that Ecuador has to offer. The Galapagos Islands are renowned for being one of the most species-rich places on earth, making it an ideal destination for volunteers who want to experience adventure and meaningful travel first hand.
