The Conservation & Community High School Special in Belize is a great way to learn about preserving marine life while contributing to the local community. You will spend your first few days participating in an Open Water certification course. In shallow waters, you’ll learn how to breathe underwater, clear your mask and equalize pressure. You will also become familiar with the buddy system and practice using underwater sign language.

A diver in Belize takes a photo of a shark on a survey dive off the Belize Barrier Reef.

Once you have your diving certification, you will start participating in conservation activities with our local staff and project partner. We work with an NGO that protects three important marine parks in the Belize Barrier Reef System, located near Placencia. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO world heritage site and an important ecosystem for many species, including whale sharks.

You will get involved in a variety of tasks during your two weeks abroad. These include salvage dives to clean-up the reefs and surrounding seabed, marine wildlife surveys and beach clean-ups. The project also has a land-based community aspect, where you will do physical work to improve a local public area such as painting a classroom or refurbishing a playground.

In Belize, you will stay with a local host family in in shared volunteer accommodation. Over the weekend, you will travel with the other volunteers and our staff to visit a nearby island or a Mayan ruin. This is a great opportunity to relax and have fun with everyone while exploring a new country and culture!
