Learn Foreign Languages Abroad

Teacher and student on a language course overseas with Projects Abroad

Living with a host family and becoming part of the local community while spending time abroad is a great chance to learn a language or improve on what you've learned.

Whether you are starting from scratch or looking to enhance your existing language skills, our classes will enable you to learn a great deal. You can choose to participate in only a language placement or spend a few weeks learning the local language before joining one of our diverse volunteer programs. This enables you to get the most out of your volunteering experience and is strongly recommended for those joining a medicine or journalism internship with a language requirement.

By taking lessons and practicing your new language skills in daily life situations, you will make good progress. Life as a volunteer is always easier when you can speak some of the local language.

These language placements include 60 hours of personal classes per month on a one-on-one basis. The lessons are tailored to suit your ability and personal requirements. You will normally study 15 hours per week from Monday to Friday, which will give you plenty of time to complete homework, spend time with your local host family, and practice your skills in your new surroundings.

It’s also easy for you to participate in local cultural experiences through libraries, entertainment events, and music.

After completing your weeks of language instruction, you could then go on to take part in another volunteer placement where you can put your language skills to good use such as Teaching in Ecuador or Arts & Crafts in Togo.

If you want to take part in a project where an intermediate to fluent level in the local language is required, then completing a four week long Language project first can enable you to take part in another internship like Medicine in Argentina or Human Rights in Morocco.

Foreign Language Classes for Volunteers

On some placements you can learn or improve your skills in the local language by taking a language course alongside your main placement. These language courses are scheduled in the free time that you have outside of your chosen volunteer placement and can be done in 5-hour, 14-hour, 30-hour, or 60-hour increments. If doing the 60-hour language course alongside your volunteer placement, you'll need to be in country for at least 10 to 12 weeks.

Language Add-on courses are available in the same destinations and languages as full-time Language Courses. For more details see our Language Add-on courses page.
