Projects Abroad Dentistry interns in Mexico can gain dental experience in a Spanish-speaking country by working in city hospitals in Guadalajara. Hospitals in Mexico are well equipped and near the standards of hospitals in the US and Canada. Interns can observe and get involved with a wide variety of tasks, ranging from general dental checks and complex treatments to working on community outreach programs.
The main hospital we work with has a busy dental department that is regularly full, so there will be plenty of procedures to observe. How much responsibility you have will depend upon your previous experience and qualifications.
Interns need to speak at least intermediate Spanish to join our Dentistry projects in Mexico. Many interns who lack confidence in their Spanish language skills join a Teaching, Care, or Spanish Language Project before joining their Dentistry placement. This gives them the opportunity to brush up their language skills before starting the medical work.
Interning Abroad as a Dentist in Mexico with Projects Abroad
As a Dentistry intern in Mexico, if you are enthusiastic and eager to help the dental staff will welcome you no matter your level of experience. By taking initiative and building a good rapport with your colleagues, you can get directly involved with the dentists and patients with whom you are working. You will be able to discuss specific cases with your supervisor, who will ensure you learn as much as possible about dentistry as practiced in Mexico.
About once a month Projects Abroad arranges visits to one of our Care placements for Medicine & Healthcare interns to give health workshops. You could get involved with this as a Dentistry intern covering topics like dental care and hygiene.
By living with one of our local Mexican host families you will have the opportunity to really hone your Spanish speaking skills. There is much to see in and around Guadalajara that you can experience with your fellow Projects Abroad volunteers. Interns need to be a minimum of 18 years old to take part on a Dentistry project in Mexico.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Mexico Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
Dentistry internships in Mexico are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in Mexico have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement.
