A medical intern shadows a team of surgeons during an operation in India

As a Projects Abroad Medicine intern in India you will see a healthcare system that in many ways reflects our own but is interspersed with local influences. For instance, you may find a doctor trained in Europe who will not carry out an operation because of the position of the stars. You will come across tropical diseases rarely encountered in the developed world and conditions that have not been diagnosed until very advanced stages.

If you have no medical experience your role will be mainly observational. Doctors will show you all they can and introduce you to many different cases. If you come with a medical background, you will be given more responsibility and the potential to take on a more active role with patients.

You will be working with doctors and medical staff who enjoy the opportunity to impart their specialized knowledge to enthusiastic interns and will be happy to answer your questions. The hospitals can get very busy and your itinerary may change daily. There will be much for you to see and experience, from regular ward rounds, outpatients clinics, and surgery to shadowing paramedics.

Interning in Medicine in India with Projects Abroad

Our medical placements are located in Jaipur. General Medicine internships in India usually involve rotations between different departments, but if you would like to specialize in one area, we can arrange for you to concentrate your time in a particular department at a hospital.

Interns can work in a wide variety of departments, including pediatrics, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gynecology and obstetrics, neurology, dermatology, urology, dentistry, ENT, oncology, radiology, and opportunities to observe surgery at busy general hospitals. The medical team also organizes visits to other centers in and around Jaipur including a center for traditional medicine, a mental health center, and a leprosy clinic. Specializing in Ayurvedic treatment is also available.

On a monthly basis, our medical team in India organizes visits for all medical interns to Ayurveda Hospital and mental health institutions. During these visits, you will have the opportunity to learn about various mental illnesses and observe how patients receive treatment with the available facilities in India. Interns may also interact with and care for various patients during monthly medical camps and visits to rural villages.

While interning in India you will experience the warm hospitality of your hosts. You will also be able to meet with other Projects Abroad volunteers on your time off and explore the local area.

Medicine internships in India are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
