Interning on a Speech Therapy internship in Togo with Projects Abroad is a worthwhile project to be involved in. In your time as a Speech Therapy intern you will provide help to the local people and gain experience that will enhance your medical knowledge and your resume.

Disabilities are often frowned upon and surrounded by stigma in Togo. Your help on the project could help to change these attitudes and have a positive impact on the lives of disabled children.

Interning Abroad as a Speech Therapist in Togo with Projects Abroad

Speech Therapy interns can be based either in an NGO or in a school. One of the NGOs with which we work is a center that supports around 30 children. Most have disabilities, such as autism, Down’s syndrome, and cerebral palsy, and benefit from focused speech therapy work.

You will support the existing speech therapists at the center. You may be involved in counseling the parents alongside the staff as well as playing educational games with the children. Individual sessions with the children form an important part of their treatment. Group sessions and raising awareness surrounding the issues of disabilities also form part of your role.

You can also get involved working in a local deaf school. Here you will help with pronunciation of sounds, spelling, and lip reading. As existing staff only get to see some of the children, your support can extend the services so more children benefit from the therapy.

Interns on all medical related projects in Togo need an intermediate level of French as most of the staff and children do not speak English. It is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in Togo. This is of even more importance in a speech focused internship.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

While interning in Togo, you will stay with one of our local host families. You can also meet other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the beautiful local area has to offer with them.

Speech Therapy internships in Togo are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
