As a volunteer on the Medicine in Ghana Winter Break Trip with Projects Abroad, you will be based in the city of Cape Coast, where you will work with volunteers of all ages from around the world. This popular project allows you to experience different approaches to medicine and treatments, compared to medical practices in North America.
In Ghana, you will have the opportunity to learn about medicine in a developing country and improve your knowledge of medicine and healthcare. The program combines outreach work in local communities, leprosy camps, and orphanages, with one day per week spent observing at a local clinic. During the outreach work and in public health clinics you will be involved in more hands-on work, like dressing wounds, carrying out health checks, giving malaria tests, and giving presentations on common health issues.
While you do not need to have previous medical experience to contribute, this project is best for pre-med students building a resume for medical school and those studying or working in healthcare fields such as nursing and community health who want to volunteer in Africa.
While volunteering in Ghana you will live with one of our local host families. You will be able to immerse yourself in the day-to-day lives of the family you’re living with.
Your two-week trip will have a timetable, with evening and weekend activities arranged. You will spend Christmas with other volunteers and Projects Abroad staff and also celebrate the coming of the New Year together. We'll also take you to visit one of Ghana's stunning palm fringed beaches and the exciting Kotokuraba market.
