PROJECTS ABROAD OFFERS PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS TO VOLUNTEER ABROAD THIS SUMMER
Gain Real-Life Experience in a Variety of Fields While Exploring a New Country
NEW YORK – May 14, 2010 – As the school year draws to a close, Projects Abroad is encouraging high school and college students to rethink the typical summer vacation or internship. Instead of sitting on the beach day after day or inside a cramped office cubicle, save sea turtles in Mexico, care for children at an orphanage in Ghana, help uncover an ancient Inca settlement or build homes in South Africa! With Project Abroad’s summer programs and internships, students gain a deeper appreciation for the diversity of culture and people, while building an impressive resume.

Two-Week High School Programs
Projects Abroad’s two-week programs for high school students are designed to provide valuable work experience or help develop a particular skill. The basic program involves two weeks for work and a weekend tourism excursion. Projects are available in the areas of Care, Conservation & Environment, Community, Journalism, Law & Human Rights, Medicine & Healthcare, Sports, Teaching and Veterinary Medicine. Program highlights include:
Spanish & Turtle Conservation in Mexico – Volunteers are located at the Campamento Tecoman biological station on the Pacific Coast where they receive up to four hours of Spanish instruction a day. In the evenings they help count, collect and bury eggs of the rare Olive Ridley turtle in a safe location, then help release the newborns into the sea. Volunteers can also look after injured adult turtles, be involved with crocodile conservation work and study wildlife in the local lagoon. Sessions are June 27-July 10, July 18-31 and August 8-21.
Care & Community Projects in Ghana – Volunteers will work at an orphanage or help renovate a local school and arrange activities for children of the community. Weekend excursions include the Kakum Rainforest Reserve and Cape Coast's slave fort. Sessions take place June 27-July 10, July 18-31 and August 1-14. For the July 18-31 session, an escorted flight is available from New York (JFK) and from Toronto (YYZ).
Inca Projects & Archaeology in Peru – Volunteers begin in Cusco with an introduction to the history of the Inca Empire, then head to the small Andean village of Huyro to help uncover Inca structures with local archaeologists. During the weekend they will visit the archaeological wonders of Machu Picchu and other ruins, explore markets, and can also white water raft down the Urubamba River. Sessions are available June 27-July 10, July 18-31 and August 1-14.
Community Building in South Africa – Volunteers help members of the impoverished community of Mfuleni build better quality homes. They live with local host families, and on the weekend will visit Table Mountain and Cape Point National Park or even have an opportunity to go whale watching at Hermanus. Sessions take place July 11-July 24 and August 1-14.
College Internships and Dissertation Program
A variety of Internship Programs are available for college students looking to boost their resume with real-world experience in a particular area of study, including Business, Medicine & Healthcare, Journalism, Law & Human Rights and Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care. The programs also provide an opportunity for students to learn and master languages in an international setting.
Undergraduates researching their final-year dissertations or theses have a unique opportunity to conduct their study through the Dissertation Program, which draws upon the supervisory expertise of Projects Abroad staff, in particular Founder and Director Dr. Peter Slowe – a former Geography professor. Staff members help students prepare a detailed research plan in conjunction with their thesis advisor, and assist with all necessary arrangements. Previous volunteers have carried out research in geography, biology, zoology, tourism, sociology, music and development studies.
Students who wish to volunteer without participating in a specific Internship or Dissertation program may select from any of Projects Abroad’s volunteer opportunities. No previous experience is necessary for most projects, and volunteers have the freedom to select their preferred destination and travel dates. Projects are a minimum of two weeks, but volunteers can choose to stay up to three months or longer.
