Is childcare volunteering in Sri Lanka for groups right for me?

This project is the perfect fit if you enjoy working with kids and want to team up with other people to support a local community. It’s one of our Team Trips, where we run a project on fixed dates so individuals from around the world can come together to form a group. At the same time, you’ll be able to explore an Asian country together. And best of all, you’ll become part of our ongoing efforts to improve early childhood education in Sri Lanka.

You don’t have to worry about organising anything in Sri Lanka, as you’ll follow an itinerary. From the moment you arrive at the airport in Colombo, we’ll plan everything. You’ll have a full schedule of volunteer work, cultural and social activities, and a weekend trip to Kandy. Throughout it all, Projects Abroad staff will be there for you.

You don’t need previous experience to join. You’ll support the work of local staff, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know. A Projects Abroad supervisor will also be there to provide advice and ideas at all times.

This is a great way to actively make a difference, and gain experience for your CV at the same time. It will help you stand out in applications and interviews. This is especially useful if you’re interested in working with children in the future.

Our Childcare & Community Work Team Trip in Sri Lanka runs over fixed dates at different times of the year. You can choose the dates that best fit your schedule.

What will I be doing?

Your team will work with children at care centres, kindergartens, or special needs centres. You’ll also assist with community work and renovations. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do:

  • Assist local teachers and caregivers with early childhood development activities
  • Help with light renovation work in local communities
  • Explore Sri Lanka with your group and immerse yourself in the local culture and way of life

The activities in this project can be divided into three main categories:

Help with early childhood development

In Sri Lanka, your group’s main role will be to support local teachers and caregivers at care centres, kindergartens, or special needs schools. You’ll focus on early childhood development, and teach kids the skills they need to thrive at school and later in life. You’ll do activities like:

  • Read stories to help improve literacy
  • Play ball games to improve hand-eye coordination
  • Sing simple English songs to teach new words
  • Play a game to learn how to count from one to ten

Community work

When you are not working with children, you’ll do light renovation and maintenance work. What you do depends on what the community needs at the time. This could include tasks like giving a building a fresh coat of paint, painting a mural, or planting a vegetable garden.

This is a wonderful way to give back as a group. In the short time you’re in Sri Lanka together, you’ll be able to accomplish a lot and create something that will benefit your placement for years to come.

Explore and experience Sri Lanka

With your group and our staff beside you, you’ll travel Sri Lanka and experience the incredible views, tropical beaches, and amazing wildlife this country is home to. You’ll do this during your weekend trip to Kandy.

Staying with a local host family will also give you direct insight into what daily life is like in Sri Lanka, and what the culture and traditions are like.

Where will I be working?

You and your group will work in several small towns around Colombo, on the coast. Sri Lanka is a gorgeous tropical island that has become a popular tourist destination over the past few years. This is because of its beautiful beaches, mountains, and wildlife reserves, as well as its fascinating history and culture.

You’ll work with your group at care centres, kindergartens, or special needs schools. Most of these placements have limited funding and resources, and conditions are basic.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Sri Lanka Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims and impact of this project?

The main aim of this project is to bring like-minded people together to meet the needs of underprivileged schools and childcare centres.

In Sri Lanka, the care centres and schools we work with are overcrowded, understaffed and under-resourced. Teachers and caregivers are unable to make sure every child learns all the early childhood skills they need. You’ll support their work by helping the children learn through fun, educational activities.

You’ll also work with your group to improve children’s learning environments. Having a colourful and healthy environment is a great way to inspire creativity and curiosity in children. Everything you do in Sri Lanka has an impact, because its part of our ongoing, long-term efforts to support the communities we work with.

Join us on our Childcare & Community Work Team Trip in Sri Lanka, and experience life there while helping children with their education.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in or around Colombo. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Sri Lanka and have a truly unique experience.

We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.

Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
