Join us on a Dentistry internship in Sri Lanka for teenagers, and learn directly from experienced dentists at a local hospital. You’ll also do health checks during outreaches we organise in disadvantaged areas. This is a great way to add dental work experience to your CV, and it could help you decide if this is the career for you!
You’ll spend most of your time shadowing dentists. We’ll teach you about different oral conditions and diseases, and how to diagnose and treat them. You’ll broaden your medical knowledge by attending lectures and workshops, and we’ll also teach you basic medical skills. You’ll use these skills to assist doctors and nurses during community outreaches.
You’ll live and work in Colombo with a group of teenagers your age, and stay with a local host family. When you’re not interning, we’ll have plenty of fun activities for you to enjoy, along with an exciting weekend trip. Throughout your internship, Projects Abroad staff will be at your side to provide support.

What will I do at a Dentistry placement in Sri Lanka for high school students?
You will work at various healthcare facilities in and around Colombo and the Kalutara District during your internship. Be sure to ask lots of questions and make lots of notes, so you can remember everything you see and learn! These are some of the things you can expect to do on this placement:
- Shadow local dentists in hospitals and learn about their daily routine
- Assist with patient screenings and preparing instruments for procedures
- Raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene in local communities
Your work will focus on these areas:
Shadow local dentists in hospitals and learn about their daily routine
You will spend a lot of your time on this placement observing dental professionals at work. This is a wonderful opportunity to ask questions and learn as much as you can from dentists. You will also sit in on consultations and watch medical procedures, such as teeth extractions and tooth cavity cleaning. Depending on the day, you’ll also be able to observe oral surgeries, like endodontics procedures and maxillofacial surgeries.
Assist with patient screenings and preparing instruments for procedures
As you learn more, you will be given various responsibilities such as preparing medical instruments for procedures and assisting during screenings. You will be taught everything you need to know, such as how to correctly clean and sterilise the instruments. You may also be asked to give patients information about oral hygiene.
Raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene in local communities
People in disadvantaged communities often have little knowledge of disease prevention and good hygiene practices, due to lack of education on the subject. You’ll assist Projects Abroad in raising awareness about oral hygiene and how to prevent tooth decay and other diseases. This will include demonstrating how to correctly brush your teeth, as well as creating posters for classrooms and community centres.
Where in Sri Lanka will I be working?
Colombo lies along the coast, and has a long history as a port city. Here, you’ll see an interesting mix of old and new, with beautiful colonial style buildings alongside high rises and shopping malls. Colombo’s interesting history and culture can be experienced best through its museums, food, and art.
During your stay, you’ll work in various healthcare facilities. You’ll also attend a two-day medical outreach where you will visit a local community centre. The hospitals you will work at are located in Panadura and Horana, which are one hour out of Colombo. Conditions at the hospitals will be more basic than you may be used to.
The dentists truly made my time on my placement enjoyable because they would always take their time to explain to me the process of a procedure they were doing and sometimes they would even draw diagrams to further illustrate what they were doing while they were giving a patient treatment.
Dentistry Internship in Sri Lanka for Teenagers
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring Our Impact
Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers and interns actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work.
We produce an annual High School Specials Impact Report, which documents some of these achievements. Find out more about the impact of these projects, and read the latest report.
