Volunteering in Belize

Experience life in the Caribbean and help support local communities

Introduction

Volunteer in Belize with Projects Abroad to support local communities in need. You’ll contribute to ongoing efforts and long-term goals. This is a chance to experience life in this beautiful Caribbean country while actively making a difference.

We offer different volunteer opportunities in Belize. You could teach children to read at a local school, or care for animals at an understaffed shelter. You can also help protect the Belize Barrier Reef, or improve access to healthcare in rural and under-resourced communities.

Most of our projects are based in San Pedro, but conservation projects are in Placencia. Wherever you work, our local staff will be available on-hand 24/7 to help you with anything you need.

Belize is a beautiful country with diverse cultures. There are spectacular beaches, marine parks, and the second largest barrier reef in the world. This is definitely a destination for beach lovers. Belize also has a rich Mayan history. There are fascinating museums and archaeological sites. Take a step out of your comfort zone and volunteer in this extraordinary tropical setting!

Where we are based in Belize

You’ll do volunteer work in Belize in either San Pedro or Placencia. Most of our projects are based in San Pedro. Our Conservation Projects are based in Placencia.

San Pedro

San Pedro is a small town on the largest island off the coast of Belize, Ambergris Caye. This town is home to about 15,000 people, many of whom travel around the town using golf carts or motorbikes. So you’re sure to see lots of these during your trip.

You’ll be living and working in local communities close to the beach. There’s plenty to do here during your free time. With idyllic beaches and the brightly coloured Belize Barrier Reef, you can spend a lot of your time on the shore and in the waves.

San Pedro is home to beautiful art galleries and museums. After your volunteer work each day, you can visit these sights and learn more about local history and culture.

Placencia

Our Diving & Marine Conservation Projects are based in Placencia, a peninsular along the southern coast of Belize ideal for connecting with nature. Placencia has a very small population of around 3,500.

You’ll live and work along the coast and in protected marine reserves, often surrounded by white-sand beaches and clear cobalt waters. This is the perfect opportunity to explore the beauty of the ocean.

This area is also rich in Mayan history. Visit sites like the Mayflower Archaeological Reserve to learn more about the country’s history. You can even spend your free time kayaking through Placencia Lagoon, diving around mangrove forests in clear blue Caribbean waters. See if you can spot some manatees and rays in the waters.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Belize Arrival Procedures page.
