A Projects Abroad Teaching volunteer helps teach a young boy arithmetic at a school in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, over three million children do not attend school, and the country has one of the lowest literacy rates in South Asia. The future for these children is bleak without improved access to education. Learning English is one of the key skills that children in Bangladesh can develop to improve their prospects.

As a volunteer on the Teaching Project, you can help provide children with the educational support they need. Your role in the classroom will be a critical one, as you will focus on building students’ English reading, writing, comprehension, and conversational abilities.

We welcome volunteers of all ages and skill levels, and you can join as part of a gap year, career break, or a volunteer vacation. You don’t need any previous experience or TEFL training or certification to participate. All we ask is that you are committed to the students you work with and that you take the time to plan classes.

Volunteering as a Teacher in Bangladesh

You will be based at elementary and high schools in Dhaka. Your exact role in the classroom will depend on your level of experience and confidence. You might assist the local English teacher, work with small groups on conversational English, or you could lead the whole lesson. Facilities in the schools we work are often basic, so you may find yourself with little more than a blackboard and a piece of chalk.

Your presence at your placement will have a hugely positive impact. Students will be eager to talk to and learn about you and you can use their interest to encourage them to practice English inside and outside the classroom. Through your classes, you should also give your students the confidence to continue working hard on their language skills, even if they make mistakes. The local teachers will also appreciate being able to practice their English with you, and you can also help introduce new teaching methods.

Although your main role will be to teach English, you can also get involved in teaching extra-curricular subjects like art, drama, music, and physical education. If you would prefer to teach other academic subjects, you will be able to teach math, science, and other subjects.

The Teaching Project in Bangladesh is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
