Country Info

Mexico is regarded as an emerging power in the global economy, but a wide gap between the wealthy and the underprivileged has hampered its development. Volunteering with Projects Abroad on a worthwhile project or internship is a way for you to contribute to sustainable development and help improve quality of life in disadvantaged communities. Our projects in Mexico are available for anyone interested in volunteering in the developing world, including those on a summer break, gap year, career break, or volunteer vacation.

Mexico is a meeting-place of cultures: a modern, industrialized, and well-educated country filled with history. American, Spanish, and Indian influences all come together to make it a fascinating place and the country offers amazing opportunities for volunteers to learn and travel within its expansive borders. It is also one of the most diverse countries in the world in terms of biodiversity, with over 200,000 different species of flora and fauna.

Where You Will Live in Mexico with Projects Abroad

The large city of Guadalajara is the home of Projects Abroad Mexico. The office is based in a popular cultural and artistic neighborhood, close to the centre of the city. We have a variety of volunteer projects and internships for volunteers to get involved in. You could find yourself contributing to Early Childhood Development in orphanages, care centres, and special needs centres, or helping students develop essential language skills in high schools and universities.

If you would like to experience life in a smaller, more rural town, we also offer projects in Ciudad Guzman, a 90 minute journey from Guadalajara. The town sits under the shadow of the great Colima Volcano and offers a more traditional experience than living in Guadalajara. There is a central plaza with plenty of cafes, restaurants, and shops to explore.

Volunteers travelling to the Conservation & Environment Project stay on the Pacific coast in the small town of Cuyutlan, near Tecoman in the state of Colima. Here, volunteers live together in a shared house close to the project.

Living in Mexico is an incredible experience. All of our volunteers (except for those joining the Conservation & Environment Project) live with a local host family and are immersed in the local lifestyle and community, from the universal passion for soccer to the “Day of the Dead” celebrations, when the whole country grinds to a halt to honor its ancestors.

Travel and Sightseeing Opportunities in Mexico

Volunteers and interns form a group of friends in Mexico with Projects Abroad

Guadalajara is fondly known as the most Mexican of cities. Tequila, sombreros, mariachi music, and rodeo riders all originated in Guadalajara.

There are plenty of activities here to fill your leisure time Attending a soccer match or lucha libre (dramatic Mexican wrestling) followed by a meal of tortas ahogadas - pork rolls drowned in chili sauce - is something that has to be experienced!

Mexico offers a bit of everything to everyone volunteering abroad, all accessible via the reliable bus services that cross the country. Domestic flights are numerous and reasonably priced, so travelling around on weekends and after your project is affordable and easy. There are cheap, clean, modest hotels in almost every small town.

To get away from it all, find a good map and a bus schedule and head for the beaches, hills, jungles, or mountains. In Mexico it is easy to get off the beaten track. It’s a paradise of mountains and volcanoes, deserts, beaches, and ancient ruins and civilizations, with nearly 30 World Heritage Sites.
