Volunteer Work with Children in Vietnam
Volunteers with an interest in working with needy children in Vietnam can join a Projects Abroad Care Project and help make a positive impact on young lives in the community. Our childcare placements are based near Hanoi and volunteers work in care centres. As a volunteer, you will have an important role to play whether you are on a gap year, career break, volunteer vacation, or are simply looking for a meaningful way to contribute.
In whichever care placement you find yourself, you need to be prepared for a challenge. As a volunteer in Vietnam, you will work to relieve the workload of the local staff, while also adding to the children's quality of life in many different ways.
Volunteer with Special Needs Children in Vietnam
The rehabilitation centres provide physical rehabilitation, education, and nursing care for many children. The aim is to improve the children’s capabilities and to lead a healthier and more independent life. You will be working with children who have a wide range of disabilities, such as autism and downs syndrome. There will also be children who have physical disabilities.
The help you will provide will be varied - it may involve practical care activities such as teaching daily hygiene routines, playing games, or helping older children with basic English skills such as learning the alphabet and counting. Your role here is crucial as it will help to improve their confidence and their future prospects.
Volunteering Abroad at a Care Centre in Vietnam
At the care centres the class sizes are large, so it is extremely difficult for the local staff to give each child the attention they need. Volunteers working here will provide a helping hand, looking after and supporting the children. It is also the perfect opportunity to put any skills and interests you have to use, whether it is arts & crafts, or teaching games and songs to the children - your suggestions will always be well received. By showing initiative and enthusiasm the options available are endless.
Our team in Vietnam organize a care workshop every other month. These workshops allow volunteers to discuss any problems they face at their placements. Volunteers receive support and advice regarding activities to carry out at the care placements. Volunteers also get the opportunity to attend creative workshops such as dance, crafts, and martial arts. These workshops are run by local specialist teachers. In the months when there is not a care workshop taking place, a similar teaching project workshop is arranged, which also covers useful topics for care volunteers.
Although some of the staff at the Care projects speak only a basic level of English, the enthusiasm of both the staff and children ensures that you will be able to make yourself understood. Both the Projects Abroad staff and your supervisor will always be available to ensure you make the most of your time in Vietnam. If you wish, Projects Abroad will also be able to provide you with a translator during your first week, to help you settle in and ask plenty of questions.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Vietnam Care Management Plan.
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
My time at placement has left me with some wonderful memories to look back on. I learnt a great deal about the culture and the generosity of the Vietnamese whom I spent a great deal of time with. Read more...
