A Projects Abroad volunteer carries a ladder at the Building Project in Jamaica during his spring break.

Throughout the parish of Manchester many local schools have no choice but to rely on unsanitary and unsafe pit toilets, which negatively impact the lives of young children. With the help of volunteers, Projects Abroad Jamaica has been working with the Ministry of Education in the region to reduce the number of pit toilets in elementary schools, as well as ensure that schools have running water. There are 40 schools in the region that need this type of upgrade and this project will benefit hundreds of children.

Volunteer helps to construct a building on the Alternative Spring Break Building project in Jamaica

In Jamaica, you will work alongside an experienced local builder as part of a committed and dedicated team. You will help by digging the foundations, mixing mortar, digging pits, laying blocks, and carrying sand, cement, water, and stones. The work that you do is crucial and will result in improving the learning environment of children in need. No construction experience is required, just a desire to work hard and lend a hand where it is needed.

You may also get the chance to be involved in a quarterly outreach scheme to help renovate houses for needy individuals who may have been affected by fire, floods, or a hurricane, or may be living in unacceptable conditions.

Volunteers on the Building project live with local host families in Mandeville, a lively town in the rolling hills of south-western Jamaica. At the end of the week you will be rewarded for your hard work with a trip to the beach or a refreshing waterfall.

If you have time you can do this project for a second week at the regular 2-week trip price.
