Volunteering on the Building Project in the Philippines is a great way to impact the lives of those who were deeply affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated parts of Cebu in 2013. You will help with the renovation and building of houses and schools. You will also be able to assist with building toilets, as many in the Philippines do not have access to proper sanitation facilities, which causes hygiene and health problems. By joining this project, you will help improve the living and learning environment for local communities.
Your group will work alongside a local builder, who will teach you the building and construction techniques you need to know. The techniques you learn are ideal for sites with limited facilities.
You can expect to get involved in various daily activities. These could include:
- digging foundations
- mixing and pouring cement
- building a roof
- putting the finishing coat of paint on the completed building.
You will also have the chance to spend time with local people and visit schools. At the schools, you and the other volunteers will help paint and clean the premises, and then read stories to the children and play educational games.
During your time in the Philippines, you will stay with a local host family. They will welcome you into their home, where you will learn about Filipino culture first hand. On the weekend, you can visit stunning nearby islands such as Capitancillo Island, where snorkelling and swimming are popular activities or take a tour and go shopping in Cebu City. Our staff will also arrange cultural evenings in Bogo City.
