Volunteers on this project will dedicate their time to helping disadvantaged children. You can be involved with running a summer camp program, or you can work at an early childhood development centre. The aim of this project is to foster social development and cultural exchange through art, drama, dance, and sports. During your stay you will live with a local host family.

One or two-week volunteers will either work at a summer camp or at an early childhood development centre. Four-week volunteers will work at two summer camps. You will dedicate two weeks to each group of children. The children at these camps will be between the ages of 3-10.

You will help with improving the literacy and numeracy levels of the children, and teach them how to care for the environment by recycling and not littering. You will also teach them about caring for themselves through healthy living and exercise, and hygiene practices.

Jamaican children take part in a physical activity outdoors with Projects Abroad High School Special volunteers.

At the summer camps, there will be scheduled activities with the children including arts and crafts activities, debates, quizzes, and performing arts like dance and drama. Volunteers also arrange both indoor and outdoor games including soccer, hide and seek, and treasure hunts. During the camp, you will also help with foreign language classes.

Where possible, volunteers will help paint fences and walls to create colorful murals in the grounds of the placement. Volunteers will also help plant vegetables and fruits in the placement's garden. At the end of the two weeks there will be a mini-concert and an arts and crafts exhibition where the children will get to showcase their talents and their art pieces. Volunteers can also choose to perform their own talent alongside the children.

We have organized outreach activities outside of your regular work, where you will get to spend time caring for the elderly.

On the weekend you will go on a trip to one of the island’s famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food, and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known.

For high school students who want to volunteer abroad over their spring break, this project is available as a shorter 1-week program on select dates in March. The spring program follows an abbreviated itinerary focusing on service work, with time still reserved for sightseeing and cultural events.
