If you are passionate about helping people understand their rights, have an interest in Spanish, and plan to pursue human rights work or law in the future, this project is perfect for you!
You will learn about the history and culture of Argentina and get involved in human rights issues at a grassroots level with the guidance of local social workers and our in-house lawyer. By working alongside people living in disadvantaged communities in Cordoba, you will gain a first-hand understanding of their daily lives and hurdles related to poverty, crime, and xenophobia that must be overcome.
At your placement, you will help work with and learn how to support victims of human rights abuse or individuals in at-risk communities. Tasks may include educating disadvantaged children about social equality, working on a project advocating for homeless people, making young prisoners aware of their basic rights, and conducting research on human rights cases.
Throughout the 2 weeks, we prepared for a mock trial, for this we had an introduction to court etiquette and the trial process, and then close to the end of our placement, we performed the mock trial with 3 judges and 4 witnesses. I was part of the defense team, which covered cross and direct examination as well as opening and closing statements. This was a serious process, which really helped us all to learn about the judicial system and was especially useful for those wanting to study law. Read more...
To get the most out of working and living abroad, volunteers receive two hours of Spanish lessons a day and live with local Spanish-speaking host families in Cordoba.
Over the weekend volunteers take a trip to the hills to see traditional villages. There might also be an opportunity to visit the former house of the famous Argentine revolutionary, Che Guevara.
This project is also available as a 4-week program on select dates. If you choose to stay longer, you will be able to spend more time at your placement and do more work in the community. During your four weeks abroad, you will visit a detention centre, La Perla, and get involved in a visual campaign developed in the most important reference point in downtown Cordoba. You will use specific costumes and display large signs related to the topic, as well as speak to local people and inform them about different issues.
Extra visits and activities will also be arranged for your group over the additional weekends. These might include a visit to Dinosaurio Mall and La Cumbrecita.
