Join our Human Rights High School Special Project in South Africa as a volunteer, to learn more about legal practice and raising awareness around important human rights issues in a developing country. This project will allow you to discover the dynamic cultures of the vibrant city of Cape Town.

Many communities and groups of people in Cape Town face challenging living circumstances, often without sufficient legal knowledge and representation. Human rights abuses continue to be a problem, especially in disadvantaged areas in the city. On this project, you will have an important role to play in helping those in need where you can.

Week 1

In your first week at the project, you will participate in a moot court held at the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office in Cape Town. You will research and build your case at the office and visit places relevant to your work, like a police station or rape crisis centre. This is a great introduction to practical legal work and you will get an insight into what the day-to-day life of a lawyer might be like. The moot court will take place at the end of your first week, and our staff will be there to hand down a verdict and provide feedback to everyone taking part. If your group has less than six volunteers, you will do a community presentation instead of the moot court.

High school students interning abroad with Projects Abroad in South Africa attend a meeting with a lawyer in Cape Town.

Week 2

Your second week will involve community-based human rights work, and the nature of this work will depend on the needs of the community at the time. Get involved in activities like:

  • Helping with evaluating our legal clinics
  • Running a needs assessment in the area where we're looking to increase our support
  • Working with street children and raising awareness about their rights and needs

We regularly run legal clinics in disadvantaged areas around Cape Town, providing free legal assistance and advice to those who are looking for help. Those who attend these clinics cannot afford legal representation, so these clinics are critical.

Explore South Africa on the Human Rights High School Special

This project will provide you with the opportunity to learn more about South Africa, its history of colonialism and apartheid, in which you will visit historical landmarks like Robben Island, the District 6 Museum, and the Slave Lodge in Cape Town.

You will live with a local host family during your stay, and will therefore get to experience true South African hospitality. Enjoy a locally cooked biryani while you discuss your exciting day’s activities with your fellow volunteers, and share stories with one another about life back home. You will have free time to explore some of Cape Town’s breath-taking natural beauty, like a cable car trip to the top of the Table Mountain, spend time with African penguins on Boulders Beach, and take a road trip along the world famous Garden Route.
