You must be a medical student to do an Elective placement. Projects Abroad works with both small health clinics and government hospitals in Kenya. Medical Elective students can have the opportunity to gain experience in a wide variety of areas. There are opportunities to specialize in general medicine/outpatients, surgery, maternity, pediatrics and work in the laboratory.
You may get the opportunity to take part in medical outreach work. Here you may visit an orphanage or school where children attend workshops on general healthcare including the importance of hand-washing and teeth cleaning, or you may work treating wounds and changing dressings etc.
Medical Student Electives in Kenya with Projects Abroad
You will shadow one of our supervisors who all speak English and are experienced at working with North American and European medical and healthcare students. Your supervisor, a qualified doctor, will be eager to test out your medical knowledge, as well as giving you the benefit of their training and experience.
Whatever your chosen specialty, Projects Abroad will work with you and your university to ensure any requirements for your Elective are met. Our in country staff are experienced in coordinating with universities.
During your stay in Kenya you will live with a local host family in Nanyuki. By interning with Projects Abroad you will also be joining our volunteer community in Kenya and you are sure to find other volunteers to spend evenings and weekends with.
Medical Student Electives in Kenya are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
While you’re in Kenya, you might also consider joining a 1 week Conservation & Environment Project. For more information, please visit our African Savannah Conservation & Environment Project in Kenya page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
