You must be a nursing student to do an Elective placement. Projects Abroad will work with you and your university to ensure your placement meets the requirements of your elective. Our in-country staff are on hand to help you organize your trip and answer your questions. In Mexico, you will have a supervisor who is a qualified member of the medical staff. They will mentor you throughout your stay, and will be available to discuss case studies with you. Your supervisor will ensure you learn as much as possible about nursing and healthcare practice in Mexico.
Nursing Student Electives in Mexico with Projects Abroad
Elective students take on a mainly observational role. While all your work will be based in a hospital, you will be able to rotate between different departments to see a variety of treatments. You can also choose to specialize in a certain area if you prefer. Departments include gynaecology, paediatrics, and surgery. The amount of hands on work you will get depends upon the hospital and your previous experience and qualifications.
By showing initiative and building a good relationship with your colleagues, you can get very involved with the doctors and patients with whom you are working. You could help clean wounds, put in IVs, put on casts, help with stitching and generally assist the doctors. Hospital units are fast paced and you need to be energetic and enthusiastic.
Elective students are required to speak intermediate Spanish to join our Mexican Nursing Elective program. If you are unsure as to whether your Spanish is good enough for the program, please give us a call. Many students who lack confidence in their Spanish language skills join a Teaching, Care, or Spanish Language Course project before joining their elective program. This gives them the opportunity to brush up their language skills before the medical part of their placement.
Elective students in Mexico live with local host families. You will immerse yourself in the Mexican day-to-day life. You can explore Guadalajara and the surrounding area with our very active Projects Abroad volunteer community.
Nursing Student Electives in Mexico are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in Mexico have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
