Anyone considering a Projects Abroad internship in the field of physiotherapy should look at Togo as a place to get important work experience. Togo is an extremely poor country and you will experience physiotherapy practices that manage without up-to-date, modern equipment. Togolese people are very welcoming and the staff at your placement will be eager to ensure you have a worthwhile time with them.

Physiotherapy interns are placed at ADS, an NGO that is located in a more rural part of Lomé. It serves children who live far from the city hospitals, ensuring they get regular contact and care.  Interns will have a mainly observational role. You may get given more to do depending on your experience and if you have a good relationship with local staff. Interns who show initiative and enthusiasm and who prove trustworthy, could be given more responsibilities.

Disabilities are often frowned upon and surrounded by stigma in Togo. Your help on the project could help to change these attitudes and improve the lives of disabled children.

Interning Abroad as a Physiotherapist in Togo

Physiotherapy interns are involved in different stages of treatment including rehabilitation. In the past interns have visited children in their homes and in schools, and have been involved in raising awareness about disabilities.

As a developing country, Togo has few resources and little equipment. You will need to be creative when interning on this program as you may have little or no access to equipment.

Interns on a physiotherapy project in Togo need an intermediate level of French. Most of the staff and children do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working with them.

While interning in Togo, you will stay with one of our warm and welcoming local host families. You will be able to meet and socialize with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the local area has to offer with them.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

Physiotherapy internships in Togo are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
