At Projects Abroad, we strive to provide safe, sustainable, educational and worthwhile overseas volunteering experiences. Our volunteers and interns range in age from young children travelling with their parents to retirees, from school students to practicing doctors and archaeologists.

Established in 1992, Projects Abroad has 25 years of experience organising volunteer placements in the developing world. It was founded in 1992 by Dr Peter Slowe; a Geography lecturer and author in the UK who, to this day, remains the President and overseer of major decisions. The organisation has long been a pioneer of worthwhile and educational travel, a leader in its field and today, we send over 10,000 volunteers a year to 31 countries across the globe.

We support and manage over 1000 individual placements including schools, children’s homes, rehabilitation and disability care centres, construction sites, conservation projects, hospitals, community health initiatives, micro-finance and human rights programs.

Safety and Security

Fundamental to this growth and success is the local infrastructure we establish in each country. Our in-country Projects Abroad staff are fully employed and fully trained and allow volunteers to benefit from sustainable and worthwhile local partnerships, as well as local knowledge and 24/7 professional support providing for their wellbeing.

We are proud to employ over 600 staff, mostly local people working in destination countries. Between them they provide on-the-ground support and guidance 24/7, ensuring a safe, educational and memorable experience for the volunteers. The responsibilities of our local staff are for the volunteers’ welfare and the support of the projects. We believe that local knowledge is the best knowledge and our staff play a key role in ensuring that your trip is safe, rewarding and productive.

Worthwhile Projects

Our range of local partners is varied, from government bodies to grassroots charities, from international NGOs to nomadic families. The idea of ‘worthwhileness’ is a driving force behind all of our programs, allowing both volunteers and host communities to take part in a constructive and rewarding experience, made possible through a constant flow of cultural exchange, understanding and respect. This allows our work at the placements to be guided by local needs and ensures that we serve communities in a sustainable and collaborative way.

Flexibility and Customization, Combinations

We know that every volunteer is an individual with unique experience and special skills to offer, as well as personal aspirations. So we customise our placements to suit each individual. You get to choose where you go, for how long, when you want to leave and when you want to return. You tell us your time restrictions and we fit these in with the needs and requirements in our destination countries.

Projects Abroad offers tailor-made group projects designed to suit the specific needs of both the group and the local community. We will ensure that your skills, preferences and qualifications fit the particular needs of the placement. There are no set start dates. Whenever you arrive and at whatever time, our staff will be waiting at the airport for you. This flexibility allows the projects to run sustainably throughout the year. We also have the ability to offer combination projects where groups can participate in more than one project in a single destination or travel to multiple destinations during their time away. This can help to create an all-round experience with Projects Abroad.
