We’ve long talked about the benefits of international volunteering, internships, and cultural travel. Our projects are designed to fully immerse you in a new culture, develop professional and personal skills, and provide you with a global perspective.
But don’t just take our word for it. We went straight to the source, with a survey of more than 225 recent Projects Abroad participants. Here’s what they told us…
“I had the best experience with you guys and really wish I could do it again”
To see the benefits of international volunteering, we needed to first understand how our participants felt about their experience with Projects Abroad. And yes, this quote was taken directly from one of our responses.
Firstly, 93% of our travelers said that they developed a broader understanding of global issues, cultures, and perspectives, something that is only increasing in importance in the modern world..
Plus, 87% now feel more confident interacting with people from different cultures and backgrounds, 79% of respondents said they are now more likely to see themselves as global citizens.
Ninety-three per cent (93%) think it has increased their ability to handle unfamiliar or demanding situations and 89% believe their experience made them more confident in themselves and their abilities.
All of this resulted in 9-out-of-10 participants saying they would recommend Projects Abroad to a friend or colleague.
“I am much more confident in my abilities and sure of myself. Going abroad was truly one of the best things I have ever done for myself.”
“Thank you for making this possible - your schedules, staff and support are truly life changing!”
We aren’t the only ones using words like ‘life changing’, our participants agree! The skills they’ve learned and experiences they’ve had will set them up for success in the next stages of their life.
For example, they can find out whether the field they work in is right for their future career. In fact, 86% of medical interns said their experience helped confirm or rule out medicine as a career path.
Here’s what one participant said about their internship:
“My experience in Nepal transformed my perspective to want to understand deeper social challenges, sparking my desire to become an international nurse and teaching me the importance of resilience.”
Of course, volunteering or interning will develop practical skills relevant to the field you choose to work in. For example, among medical travelers, 86% said their Medical Internships made them more confident in healthcare or clinical environments. 95% believed their Medical Internship gave them experience they could not have found at home.
But, traveling internationally with Projects Abroad exposes you to much more than just the workplace. You’ll meet new people, explore a new culture, and embrace new challenges.
The global perspective and intercultural communication skills our travelers learn are crucial in the modern world. People and businesses are connected on a global scale like never before. Understanding how others might view, approach, and tackle certain tasks or issues is the first step of working together efficiently.
This enhanced perspective can also often help people better appreciate what they have and motivate themselves to achieve more at home. Plus, these experiences, when shared with other travelers, can lead to lifelong friendships across borders.
“The best experience, highly recommend it to everyone! It's such a good opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds. You gain a lot of transferable skills and knowledge that you can mention on your CV, personal statement and at interviews.”
“Amazing program, one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and will never forget.”
91% of our travelers said that they felt more independent and capable of managing new situations as a result of their experience with us.
91% feel more adaptable, 78% believe their experience helped them work better as a team, and 72% think it has improved their leadership. Life is never quite straightforward, so perhaps most importantly, 86% feel better able to cope with challenges and setbacks.
Traveling with Projects Abroad helps you discover more about the world, but also yourself. Our projects develop your confidence, independence, and adaptability. You might even learn a new language, or ignite a love for a culture you didn’t know you had.
You’ll develop as a person, contribute towards international initiatives, and most of all, have an incredible experience. What’s not to love?
“It helped me with my confidence, which was a problem I had struggled with for as long as I can remember”
