Roland Eikenroth - Teaching, Teach IT in Sri Lanka
Roland from Germany spent three months in Sri Lanka working at a school and our IT Centre. He has recently signed up to return to Sri Lanka later this year.
No sooner had I arrived in Mawala than I was asked to participate in a trip to the hill town of Nuwara Eliya. I took the opportunity to meet the other volunteers and to get a first impression of the land and people. I was amazed at their friendliness and readiness to help. The children everywhere waved to us.
As there were school holidays at that time, everyone who had an interest in extra lessons could attend school from Tuesday to Thursday every week. I was surprised because I didn't expect so many well behaved children who were keen on learning English even during their holidays.
I stayed at the IT Centre in Mawala during my placements. It was just a few minutes walk from Mawala School. Many children and young adults were very interested in attending a computer course. One of them, a young student, applied for a job after receiving her Projects Abroad Certificate from the IT course. I was happy to hear that she got the job on her 20th birthday.
Since the students worked hard, we had enough time for conversations. Amongst other things, they helped me to learn Singhala (the local language). I remember once I was asked by a boy if there were penguins in Germany. So I took the opportunity to talk about my home country. All in all, we had a lot of fun together.
Always when the work was done, I met other volunteers on the beach of Wadduwa, where we enjoyed the tropical sunsets. Unfortunately, the time went by very quickly. And the day of my departure drew near. It was hard for me to say good bye to all my friends. So I have decided to come back as soon as possible.
