Medicine and Healthcare interns participate in a medical outreach in Jamaica.

As a Medicine intern in Jamaica with Projects Abroad, you can gain medical experience observing skilled local doctors in a hospital or health centre. English is common in Jamaica, making it a suitable destination for interns of all skill levels, including gap year and pre-medical students, and medical students and professionals.

Medical facilities in Jamaica are of a good standard and Jamaica was one of the first countries to establish national healthcare. However, resources are limited, especially when compared to more developed countries. You are likely to encounter many diseases that are less common in North America, including malaria, sickle cell anemia, and rare cancers.

Interns in Jamaica are based in Mandeville at the Mandeville Regional Hospital or at a health centre, depending on their studies. The hospital accepts medical students or those with more experience, while the health centres welcome pre-medical students or anyone seeking some form of medical experience.

Working at a hospital offers experience in both in-patient and out-patient services. You will be able to work in departments such as general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics. The health centres offer a variety of services including an adolescent health clinic, wellness clinic, child health, curative health, family planning and health program, and sexually transmitted infection clinics.

All Medicine interns in Jamaica need to be at least 18 years old.

Interning Abroad in Medicine in Jamaica with Projects Abroad

As a Medicine intern in Jamaica you will shadow local doctors. Doctors in Jamaica welcome interns with a range of experience as long as you are enthusiastic and ready to participate. By showing initiative and building a good rapport with your colleagues you can get highly involved with the doctors and patients with whom you are working. Your supervisor can ensure that you work in a variety of areas during your internship and learn as much as possible about medical practices in Jamaica.

Medicine interns also have the opportunity to participate in our regular outreach programs aimed at helping local people learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. These initiatives, such as presentations about important local healthcare concerns, offer free healthcare assistance to community members who may not have access to the local services. Interns receive thorough training from a qualified public health nurse and all outreach programs are run under the guidance and supervision of qualified medical personnel as well as a Projects Abroad member of staff.

Our Medical and Healthcare Project Officer organizes regular workshops for our Medicine interns as well. These meetings provide deeper insight into the healthcare system in Jamaica. They also provide an opportunity to become familiar with the most common ailments in the country and to discuss and share the work that you do at your placement.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Jamaica Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

Interning in Jamaica you will live with a local host family who will provide your meals and a taste of Jamaican hospitality. When you are not working there is plenty to do in and around Mandeville, and becoming part of our lively and diverse volunteer community means there are always others around.

My working experience here in Jamaica has been nothing less than amazing. During my four months I did a one month rotation in each of the major departments in the hospital: pediatrics, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, and internal medicine. Read more...

Medicine internships in Jamaica are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills volunteering abroad as a professional in Jamaica. If you are a high school student and first-time traveler you may want to consider our High School Special programs in Jamaica.
