As a Projects Abroad Midwifery intern in Peru, you will learn about the midwifery profession in a developing country by working in a large public health center or a large public hospital. Here you may see aspects of midwifery you are not used to at home, although the maternity units are generally well equipped.

Your role as an intern will be that of an observer. You will shadow qualified doctors and other medical staff in the maternity units throughout their day. You can experience pre-natal consultancies, births, caesarean sections, and post-natal care.

Depending upon your experience, you may be able to help with births as well as support women in the pre-natal and post-natal departments. Interns who are enthusiastic and willing to learn will gain the most from this project.

Interns on Midwifery internships usually work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free. Night shifts are available if you wish.

Interns on the Midwifery project in Peru live with one of our local host families. Here you will be welcomed into a warm Peruvian home and you’ll also have the chance to practice your Spanish speaking skills. On weekends, you can explore the delights of the Sacred Valley and the surrounding region with our volunteer community.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Peru Medicine & Healthcare
Management Plan

For all Midwifery internships in Peru, you need at least intermediate Spanish.

All volunteers participating on standard projects in Peru have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Rainforest Conservation & Environment Project in Peru page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills volunteering abroad as a professional in Peru.
