Teaching in Thailand followed by Care in Cambodia and Sports in Vietnam
Help out on a Teaching Project in Krabi, Thailand where you'll lead a classroom alongside a local teacher, then volunteer with disadvantaged children at a day care centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. End your trip coaching and teaching P.E. to youth in Hanoi, Vietnam.
When to go:
December to February or January to March.
Join each project for 4 weeks.
First, help out on a Teaching Project in Krabi or Ao Nang where you’ll help lead a classroom alongside a local teacher. Most volunteers work in government-run elementary schools with children ages 7 to 12 years. Thai students are generally dedicated and hard-working and respond well to the arrival of a new face. Some of the ways your students will benefit from your work are:
- By improving their English, you are helping them obtain better jobs
- Helping students prepare for national exams
- Getting students involved in extra-curricular activities such as art, drama, music, or sports
In Phnom Penh, most volunteers work with a Non-Governmental Organization called Khemara. Khemara is the oldest locally registered NGO in Cambodia. Since 1991 they have played a significant role in working for the advancement of women and children in Cambodia by working directly with local communities. Projects Abroad and Khemara run nine day care centres on the outskirts of Phnom Penh.
Disadvantaged mothers drop their children off at the centres so they can go out to work for the day. As a volunteer you will be looking after the children, aged between 3 to 6 years old, and help with their early childhood development. Your daily tasks may include:
- Reading to the children
- Working individually with local staff to build their English capacity
- Raising awareness of children's rights
And finally, you can volunteer on a Physical Education Project in Vietnam without any previous coaching experience. Volunteers work in either an elementary or high school near Hanoi, coaching PE classes to students between 6 and 18 years old. The number of students in each class varies from about 30 to 55 students. Soccer and basketball are the most popular sports, though teaching new sports would also be welcome.
P.E. classes are a great opportunity for Vietnamese students to get involved in a physical activity that:
- Boosts confidence
- Improves health
- Allows them to meet other students
- Provide a sense of belonging to a team that has a common goal
In your free time, you will have a chance to explore some of the breathtaking sights of this region, including Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Halong Bay in Vietnam, and the beautiful beaches of southern Thailand.
