Projects Abroad volunteer helps a child with an educational activity at a care centre in Belize

Tourism and eco-tourism are growing rapidly in Belize. However, the country still faces major development challenges, with poverty and inequality being major factors. Children are an especially vulnerable group and there are many in need of extra educational and emotional support.

On the Care in Belize Alternative Spring Break Trip, you will work with underprivileged children at a care centre or kindergarten. Here, you have the opportunity to get involved with various daily activities, including running activities and games, helping with homework, preparing for meals, and playing and socializing with the children. Not only does this benefit the children, but it also helps ease the burden on local staff, who struggle with limited resources and understaffing.

Additionally, you can give back to your placement by contributing to the regular upkeep of the centre and renovation projects. Painting a colourful mural or refurbishing a play area will help make a lasting impact on the children’s lives even after you have returned home.

During your time in Belize, you will live with a host family in San Pedro, a town on the southern part of the island of Ambergris Caye. At the end of the week, you can relax with the other volunteers after a week of volunteer work with a trip to the beach, where you can enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving, or explore the town.

Getting involved in a Care project is ideal for Social Work, Child Development, Education, or Psychology majors looking for practical experience, or any student who wants to do meaningful and fun volunteer work over spring break.
