Join us for our Medicine & Spanish High School Special in Bolivia to learn about how medicine is practiced in a different country, and improve your Spanish while living and working in a Spanish-speaking environment. On this project, you will observe local doctors during their consultations and while they work in various hospital departments. You will also take part in outreach programs to provide medical treatment to those who have little to no access to health care in a rural community.
Your outreach work will take place in a remote village in Cochabamba, which has no nearby hospital. Outreach projects often provide the only form of medical treatment that members of the community receive. During the outreaches, you will check vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rates, and temperatures for children and the elderly.
The local medical staff you work with will teach you about traditional medicine and lead workshops on performing first aid, doing stitches, and giving injections. This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and experience, and we encourage you to ask many questions and take notes of the various illnesses and treatments you learn about and observe.

In addition to working in hospitals and on outreaches, you will spend a morning at a veterinary clinic, where you will get to observe surgery on animals. Animal organs are often similar to human organs, so this will provide you with valuable exposure to surgical practices and techniques. The vet will talk you through the operation and explain everything step-by-step.
As a Spanish-speaking country, Bolivia is an excellent place to learn and practice Spanish. During your time abroad, you will attend around ten hours of Spanish classes run by a professional teacher, and these lessons will be separated according to your level. You will get to practice your Spanish with the doctors and patients you interact with. Improving your skill in another language is important for anyone going into the medical field.
During your stay, you will live with a local host family, which will make your time abroad an authentic Bolivian experience. You will share meals with your host family, exchange stories, practice your Spanish, and get to know the daily lifestyle of a Bolivian family. Over the weekend, you will have plenty of time to explore famous Bolivian landmarks such as the Tiwanaku Ruins, Sun Island, and Lake Titicaca – the largest lake in South America.
