The Projects Abroad Toronto chapter stands as an extension of the university’s academic spirit, an effort to translate knowledge into lived experience.
Conceived to dissolve the barriers between scholarship and the wider world, this Chapter offers students at the University of Toronto a direct path to global engagement.
Our strongest foundations lie in healthcare, where students can accrue clinical exposure, shadowing hours, and volunteer experience in settings across Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
However, scope of our programs extends well beyond medicine. From legal advocacy and microfinance to education, journalism, and marine conservation, we provide pathways for students across disciplines to confront the practical realities of their fields.
By embedding this chapter within UofT, we aim not merely to supplement academic learning, but to enrich it, transforming theory into action, and study into service.
Meet Garbo, Director for Toronto, Projects Abroad

Garbo Hu founded the University of Toronto chapter of Projects Abroad with a singular vision: to democratize access to global experiences and bring high-impact, international opportunities within reach of students across disciplines.
Having volunteered on a medical placement in Nepal, he witnessed first-hand the transformative potential of immersive, hands-on learning abroad.
A student of biochemistry and physiology with a minor in immunology, Garbo is no stranger to rigorous academics, but he believes education must extend beyond the laboratory and the lecture hall.
His leadership is rooted in a commitment to purposeful engagement: building infrastructure, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that students not only go abroad, but return with a sharpened sense of self, skill, and global responsibility.
“The message I hope to imbue is a simple one. To inspire others to become starkly aware of the power within their hands to affect change. I feverishly hope this position with which I will tirelessly serve can help others truly understand that."
