PRO Veterinary Medicine in Samoa
- POSITION: Veterinarian
- PLACEMENT LOCATION: Apia
- REQUIREMENTS: Degree in Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Nursing or a related subject
- ACCOMMODATION: Host family
- LENGTH OF PLACEMENT: From 1 week
- START DATES: Flexible
We have partnered with an animal welfare organization in Samoa, that focuses on providing veterinary care for domestic animals, specifically dogs and cats. With dedication, they strive for a reduced and healthy domestic animal population.
Due to a lack of Samoan vets and poor local knowledge of animal welfare, the organization relies on volunteers who are certified veterinarians to help them achieve their goals and deliver numerous services to the Samoan community.
Therefore, as a qualified veterinarian or veterinary nurse, you will be able to help and support staff and volunteers in many significant areas.
How can volunteer veterinarians or veterinary nurses help in Samoa?
With your experience and skills, you will cover a number of important roles from providing consultations or treatments for sick and injured domestic animals to assisting or performing animal sterilization. You will also help manage the daily running of the organization.
You may also help with the development of their Mobile Veterinary Clinic, the provision of free mass de-sexing services as well as providing educational programs to schools and community groups.
As an experienced veterinarian, you will be able to work unsupervised on certain cases, allowing local staff time to carry out other pressing tasks.
You will work weekdays – and sometimes out of hours – depending on the individual project and how you develop your role with your project supervisor.
This project runs throughout the year.
What will I gain from this project?
You will be working for an established organization, with existing and devoted local sponsors and donors, which have a well-developed community outreach program. Consequently you will be able to grow your existing expertise by working in an environment where the government, sadly, has limited resources.
You will also have the chance to progress in skills and experience in a wide range of areas, which will prove to be invaluable to your career. These are project dependent, but may include:
- Developing a human resource strategy for provision of fully staffed operations.
- Using your qualifications to train staff and other volunteers.
- Forming baseline population data studies for the Samoan community.
- Developing projects/programs through the process of sharing ideas.
What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?
We have over 20 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Samoa is successful and enjoyable:
- Safe accommodation with a Samoan family close to your project.
- Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
- A friendly member of staff available to meet you on arrival at the airport.
- Medical and travel insurance.
What skills or qualifications do I need?
If you have at least a degree in Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Nursing or a related subject then you will be suited for this project.
Ideally, a qualified veterinarian or veterinary nurse would also possess at least two years’ experience of practicing professionally.
Specific specialisms or interests in your field will be highly desirable. Please discuss this with us on application.
Please contact us if you think your knowledge may be useful on this project but do not have the required qualifications.
This project is available for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
