International Midwifery Internships in Ghana

If you choose to intern as a midwife in Ghana with Projects Abroad, you will learn from experienced midwives in Ghana and are likely see midwifery techniques different from what you are used to. You will also find yourself coming into contact with pregnant women experiencing complications not as common in North America. These include malaria and typhoid. This experience will be challenging, but also rewarding.
Interning as a Midwife in Ghana with Projects Abroad
Projects Abroad Midwifery interns with no medical experience will be placed in Dodowa, as there is more supervision and instruction for volunteers who are there on an observational and learning bases. If you are a professional volunteer, you will be placed at a hospital in Cape Coast. Interns with medical experience, but who are not fully qualified, can be based at either location.
If you work in Cape Coast you will be placed at the main regional hospital. It is one of the more modern hospitals in Ghana, with a wide range of departments and a large amount of new equipment.
When you first arrive at the hospital you will discuss your work schedule with the Projects Abroad co-ordinator and your placement supervisor, a member of the hospital staff. You will take on the role of an intern shadowing and learning from hospital midwives. Your qualifications and experience will determine how much responsibility you can take on in the hospital.

While a Midwifery intern in Ghana you will live with a local host family. As one of our most popular destinations, there is plenty to do in Ghana. There will always be a large Projects Abroad volunteer community for you to meet up with outside of working hours.
Midwifery internships in Ghana are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
During my time at the University Hospital, I worked alongside a variety of brilliant women. The bond I made with these women is what allowed me to act as a midwife, and even relocate to a few other wards, including surgical and radiology to assist with various needs. My placement was awesome. I was able to work a variety of shifts, experience hands on medical training, and learn international customs. As I showed initiative and effort I was taught to perform various medical assignments that included administering medications intravenously and intramuscularly, collecting vital signs, and performing vaginal exams.Read more...
